Local businesses support and spread Breast Cancer Awareness
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, members, as well as local businesses, within the Wooster community are finding creative and fun ways to spread awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research.
Although opportunities for fundraisers occur throughout most of the year, October is the prime time for those wishing to participate in such a worthy cause. Through races, shopping bargains, and massive amounts of media coverage, breast cancer organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation raises the majority of their funds throughout the month of October.
In Wooster, a variety of local businesses have found ways to encourage support toward breast cancer research by creating events and incentives for consumers.
Panera Bread in Wooster has sponsored breast cancer research for several years with their seasonal addition of the Pink Ribbon Bagel.
According to manager Maria Cuzzodini, the Pink Ribbon bagels help to support the Wooster Community Hospital Cancer Treatment Center.
“On the first day of October, all of the profits from our bagels go to the hospital. After that, a percentage of everyday’s profits are sent to them as well,” Cuzzodini said.
In addition, Panera Bread sends 300 Pink Ribbon bagels to the hospital every Wednesday where they are sold to employees and patients for $1. Those profits go entirely to the hospital.
Cuzzodini also mentioned Panera Bread employees and managers wear pink on Wednesdays, to create awareness for both the fundraiser and breast cancer as a whole.
Along with Panera, local nail salon Tips Toes and Beyond is also helping to support breast cancer research this month.
“For every breast cancer ribbon design we do, we will donate the cost of the design to the Breast Cancer Foundation,” Tracy Doung, co-owner of Tips Toes and Beyond said.
As well as month long specials, several Wooster community businesses have created events throughout the month of October.
Wooster’s Declaration Crossfit will be hosting an event with Girlfriend’s Corner on Oct. 25th in their gym. This event will include an hour-long workout followed by a discussion with past survivors and those battling breast cancer today. There is no cost to the event, but donations will be accepted and encouraged, as all profits will benefit breast cancer research.
For those interested in support breast cancer awareness and research this month, the Wooster community offers a variety of opportunities.
