WCSD honors veterans
On Nov. 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first Armistice Day to recognize Americans who lost their lives serving in World War I.
The tradition of Veterans Day continues still throughout the country; however the United States now recognizes all veterans on Nov. 11, not just World War I veterans.
Wooster City Schools recognizes veterans throughout the district every year at all grade levels within the district.
Dean Frank, Principal of Edgewood Middle School elaborated as to on what the day will entail at his school.
“We will have a lunch and assembly to honor our veterans on Nov. 11. The whole school is very involved with class projects that help teach the students the significance of this day. The projects vary from teacher to teacher to keep each year special,” Frank said.
Events taking place at some of the district’s elementary schools differs from events being put on at Edgewood.
Megan Routh, music teacher at both Cornerstone and Kean Elementary Schools, will organize the events at both schools to honor veterans.
“Cornerstone and Kean Elementary Schools will be observing Veterans Day this year through a concert provided by the fourth grade classes. ‘Thank You, Soldier’ is a musical tribute to current and retired servicemen and women. The programs will take place during the day for the student body, as well as in the evening for parents and community members. The evening performances will begin at 7 p.m. in their respective gymnasiums,” Routh said.
Honoring veterans is something that is done annually in every school in Wooster City School District, and WHS recognizes the day in the same way every year.
