Alumni remember Maurer Field
Generations of Generals describe past memories of Maurer Field.
For years, Maurer Field has endured the stomping of cleats from various sports and pom-poms waving as cheerleaders support the Generals. Maurer Field is currently for sale, as the new turf is now being used for WHS football and lacrosse. As of Oct. 20, Wooster Youth Instructional Football has given the highest bid for Maurer Field.
Paul Dawson, alumni of WHS, played football at Maurer Field in 1982 through 1985. Young students of Wooster have begun their sporting careers starting at Maurer Field, Dawson mentions, including his children who participated in lacrosse and WYIF.
The field does have significance to Dawson, as he shared that there is a lot of history that took place there and he said he feels Wooster should understand the true importance of Maurer.
Dawson agrees with many in that the turf is a good change, but will be upset to see Maurer go if it is sold to anyone other than the LAX club or WYIF.
“Wooster needs to remember that there is tradition here and a lot to be proud of. There will always be changes made in life, but don’t forget the people and events that create the traditions that are made in high school,” Dawson said.
Holly Pope, Intervention Specialist, lacrosse coach and alumni of WHS shares that switching from Maurer Field to Follis Field will bring mixed emotions. Playing lacrosse at Maurer 15 years ago, Pope mentions that as a player, it makes her upset to see Maurer Field go because at that time, it was strictly a lacrosse field. As a coach, Pope said it is a good move, giving WHS lacrosse something to be proud of, also adding that she hopes more will attend the games, given Follis Field’s more central location.
“Maurer holds an important part of lacrosse and WHS athletics’ past, but I think it’s time to move on. We are lucky enough to have a state-of-the-art educational faculty and our athletes deserve state-of-the-art as well,” Pope said.
Like Dawson, Cy Morgan played football in the years 1977 through 1980 and is sad to see the field go but is excited for new beginnings.
Agreeing that Follis Field has better parking and is more convenient for guests, Morgan thinks it will be a good replacement for Maurer Field.
